Paul Kingsnorth

Jeg hadde ikke hørt om denne forfatteren før jeg kom over prosjektet «The Dark Mountain«. Det ble startet av Kingsnorth og Dougald Hine i 2009. Da skrev de «Uncivilisation» sammen, med undertittelen «The Dark Mountain Manifesto«. Nå har jeg lest ferdig boka «Against the Machine«, som er Kingsnorth sin siste bok, og har begynt på «Confessions of a Recovering Enviromentalist» (2017). I forordet til denne siste boka går det ganske klart frem at han har gitt opp både miljøbevegelsen og troen på at dette kan gå bra:

I saw that the momentum of the human machine – all its cogs and wheels, its production and consumption, the way it turned nature into money and called the progress growth – was not going to be turned around now. Most people did´t want it to be; they were enjoying it. All the arguments, all the colourful campaigns, all the well-researched case studies were just washing up on the beach and expiring quietly on the sand, like exhausted jellyfish. There was no stopping what we had unleashed. We were going to eat everything, including ourselves. It was locked in now. It was too late.

I går kveld (18.6) leste jeg ferdig manifestet, og jeg synes avslutningen fortjener en plass her i bloggen – se link til hele lenger opp:

THE EIGHT PRINCIPLES OF U N C I V I L I S AT I O N 

We must unhumanise our views a little, and become confident 
As the roc\ and ocean that we were made from.' 

1. We live in a time of social, economic and ecological unravelling. All around us are signs that our whole way of living is already passing into history. We will face this reality honestly and learn how to live 
with it. 

2. We reject the faith which holds that the converging crises of our 
times can be reduced to a set of 'problems' in need of technological or political 'solutions'. 

3. We believe that the roots of these crises lie in the stories we have been telling ourselves. We intend to challenge the stories which underpin our civilisation: the myth of progress, the myth of human centrality, and the myth of our separation from 'nature'. These myths are more dangerous for the fact that we have forgotten they are myths. 

4. We will reassert the role of story-telling as more than mere entertainment. It is through stories that we weave reality. 

5. Humans are not the point and purpose of the planet. Our art will 
begin with the attempt to step outside the human bubble. By careful 
attention, we will reengage with the non-human world. 

6. We will celebrate writing and art which is grounded in a sense of place and of time. Our literature has been dominated for too long by those who inhabit the cosmopolitan citadels. 

7. We will not lose ourselves in the elaboration of theories or ideologies. Our words will be elemental. We write with dirt under our fingernails. 

8. The end of the world as we know it is not the end of the world full stop. Together, we will find the hope beyond hope, the paths which lead to the unknown world ahead of us. 

Fortsettelse 10. august 2026: Nå har jeg lest ferdig «Confessions of a Recovering Enviromentalist» (2017), og det er definitivt noen utdrag jeg har lyst til å ha med meg videre. Boka består av essay fra bøkene til Dark Mountain Project og fra Guardian. Her er det mye bra, og spesielt det siste essayet (Planting Trees in the Anthropocene) ga meg litt hakeslipp. At noen kan se så tydelig inn i framtida.

Første avsnittet er et sitat av Aldous Huxley. På mitt besøk i bokbyen Fjærland i forrige uke fant jeg 4-5 bøker av ham, og det er ganske sjeldent. Oversatte fra 30-tallet. Gleder meg til å ta fatt på disse. Det kan du kanskje skjønne når du ser hva Kingsnorth har sitert fra Huxley:

Reality as actually experienced contains intuitions of value and significance, contains love, beauty, mystical ecstasy, intimations, of godhead. Science did not and still does not possess intellectual instruments with which to deal with these aspects of reality. Consequently it ignored them and concentrated its attention upon such aspects of the world as it could deal with … in the arts, in philosophy, in religion men are trying – doubtless, without complete success – to describe and explain the non-measurable, purely qualitative aspects of reality.

I boka skriver Kingsnorth at «ecocentrism» er løsningen – vi må bort fra at mennesket er i sentrum. Kommunisere med alt som lever. Her henter han frem et sitat som beskriver det på en veldig god måte:

We are talking only to ourselves. We are not talking to the rivers, we are not listening to the wind and stars. We have broken the great conversation. By breaking that conversation we have shattered the universe. All the disasters that are happening now are a consequence of that spiritual ´autism´.

Så til det siste essayet som jeg henviste til over. Her tar han utgangspunkt i boka til Kevin Kelly – What Technology Wants, som han beskriver som en religiøs tekst. Kelly mener nemlig at «teknologi» ikke bare er en samling verktøy og maskiner, men «a living force». Denne kraften kaller han «technium».

The technium extends beyond shiny hardware to include culture, art, social institutions, and intellectual creations of all types. In includes tangibles like software, law, and philosophical concepts. And most important, it includes the generated impulses of our inventions to encourage more toolmaking, more technology invention, and mor self-enhancing connections.

Rett etter dette sitatet følger Kingsnorth opp med en beskrivelse av dette tekno-utopia:

… Techno-utopianism is a subset of all the contemporary religion of progress, into which we are all baptised at birth. If progress is God, technology is the messiah come to do His will on Earth.

Dette essayet gjorde sterkt inntrykk, og jeg har bestilt boka til Kelly. Det er helt utrolig at Kingsnorth så ting så klart allerede i 2017. Jeg tar med noen få setninger til fra dette essayet:

… I may not share Kevin Kelly´s perspective, but I think he is right about the nature of the technium. I think there is something bigger than us, rearranging itself around us now like a prison. It´s a prison we don´t seem to want to escape from, because there´s so much fun to be had in it; and anyway if we did want to escape we couldn´t, so why bother trying?

Dette skrev han altså lenge før språkmodellene. Det siste året opplever jeg at flere og flere snakker om KI «som sin beste venn», «sparringpartner» o.l. Jeg tar meg selv også i å si takk og korrigere. Dette er et verktøy som oppleves som «bigger than us»… Som vi kommer til å bl avhengige av – til de grader, og som kommer til å sløve ned tenkning og kritisk sans.

Kingsnorth kommer med noen forslag til hva vi kan gjøre:

Stoppe opp/sitte stille: Først da kan vi få en grundig forståelse av hva utfordringen består i.
Vitne. Bevitne det som skjer. Jeg prøver å gjøre dette gjennom tekst og foto.
Plante trær. Både symbolsk og virkningsfullt.
Lage ting/ta vare på det nære. Han fremsnakker håndverk, stedet, lokalsamfunnet og familien.
Historier. Vi trenger gode historier, som gjør at folk ønsker en endring.
