Paul Kingsnorth – Against the Machine

… Our society has attached a meaning to greatnes that i not as far away from Hitler´s as it would like to believe, despite our cant about democracy and freedom. Our idols today are economic conquest, unending «growth» built on turning all life into «resources» fro human consumption, scientism disguised as objective inquiry, manic forward motion, and the same old quest for perfectibility.

Paul Kingsnorth, s. 16

… I believe that the heart of the crisis that is enveloping so much of the world today – cultural, ecological and spiritual – i this ongoing process of mass uprooting. … We could simply call this process modernity, which is not a time period so much as a story we tell ourselves. But I prefer to call it the Machine, because a machine – as the poets showed me – is what it feels like. This process, which has been going on for centuries, of uprooting us from nature, culture and God, leads u into a mass society, controlled by and for technology, in which we have been on course to become, since at the least Industrial Revolution, mere cogs in a giant mechanism that we have no control over.

Paul Kingsnorth, . 18-19

Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of a cancer cell.

… The great genius of the Machine, and one reason for its flourishing, is that it can absorb its own critics, co-opt their criticism, and then, very often, commercialise it. So pervasive are the Machine´s values that often those who promote what they imagine is an alternative find themselves doing its work.

Paul Kingnorth, s. 41

The eighteenth century´s two revolutions – the revolution of Reason and the revolution of Technology – were supposed to walk us towards a universal paradise. Instead, we live in a time of mass extinction and cultural disintegration.

Paul Kingsnorth, s. 62

Men, her er ikke bare mørke beskriveler. Han er også innom noen løsninger:

… Want is the acid. Capitalism is the battery. Growth is the engine. Greed is the forming energy that moves us to where we are inevitably headed.
What is the break?
The answer is as hard as it is old-fashioned: limits. Modernity is a machine for destroying limit. The ideology of the Machine – the liberation of individual desire – sees our world as a blank slate to be written on afresh when the old limits of nature and culture are washed away.

Paul Kingnorth, s. 98-99

Cosmopolis has us all in its sway, and it has a powerful story to tell. The dream of a globalised, rational world in which all comers trade under the West´s benevolent gaze is fading as the West does, but the techno-capitalist Machine it spawned lives everywhere now, humming in the fibre optic cables and looking down on us from satellites. The Machine is the true inheritor of the cosmopolitan dream, made manifest in every glowing screen, and it is remaking us all in its image.

Paul Kingnorth, s. 110

… Like a dictator marching on Moscow, the Machine doesn´t know when to stop, and now we can see where this project of globalised liberation is leading us: into the world of the nihil, into the empire of technique.
As a result, human culture is in the process of being consumed by the Machine. Something organic is being superseded by something planned; something natural by something technological.

Paul Kingsnorth, s. 131

  1. Past. Where a culture comes from, its history and ancestry.
  2. People. Who a culture is. A sense of being ´a people´.
  3. Place: Where a culture is. Nature in its local and particular manifestation.
  4. Prayer. Where culture is going. Its religious tradition, which relates it to God or the gods.

Her er det mulig å føle han synes jeg, men så kan han ble så negativ av J.D. Vance blir en alliert. For eksempel her:

The deflating west is becoming a place of almost pure negation. After decades of cultural inversion, we have forgotten how to do anything but deconstruct, there is nothing left to overturn, and we have come to define ourselves by what we are not. Black is Not-White, Female is Not-Male. Gay is Not-Straight, and Trans is Not-Gay. Muslim is Not-Christian. Weak is Not-Strong. Welcom to the Not-West. Make sure you scan your QR-code on the way in, or you´re liable to have your bank account frozen.

Paul Kingsnorth, s. 140

… If the self is our object of worship and science our new priesthood, then we could say that sex is our liturgy and prayer rule. The sexual revolution of the 1960s is beginning to look like one of the most consequential aspects of the modern revolution, pitching us from a society which has coy about sexuality into a society which manically centres it in all its forms, and which increasingly sees sexual expression and identity as the core of our human being. This has developed very recently into an agressively promoted cultural order, with the centre of the new ritual year being «Pride-month», an ever-expanding pseudo-religious festival sponsored by institutions and corporations, promoted by the media and given lip service by anyone who wants to get on in the world. … celebrates the free play of individual desire, that spiritualises the individualistic war on limits, and centres and celebrates the use of technology to win that war – in our bodies as well as in the world.

Paul Kingsnorth, s. 241-42

Og han fortsetter på neste side:

The crisis of the modern world is not a crisis of technology or politics or greenhouse gases. It is a spiritual war. What the Machine represents is our ultimate rebellion against nature: against reality itself.

Paul Kingsnorth, s 243

På neste side fortsetter det med nytt kapittel, og en omtale av Internett: «The Internet and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.»

«we no longer live in the presence of the world, but rather in a re-presentation of it». There is no territory in this new world, only map. Thos who can see this, and try to point it out, are dismissed as ´romantics´, ´nostalgics´, ´reactionaries´and ´dreamers´.

Paul Kingsnorth, s. 267

The past, the future: they are not ours to inhabit. Home is not there. So where is it?
Well, perhaps it is here. Perhaps it was here all along.
After all, we are still people, we still inhabit places, we have our inheritance, and God is still all around us, and within us, if we want to go looking for Him. We have all the ingredients. Maybe we just need to work out how to mix them.

Paul Kingsnorth, s. 311
