… we can´t control our internal thoughts and emotions the way we think we can. … we are attempting to control the uncontrollable. In the ACT model, suffering results from the struggle to change, control, or avoid discomfort. … We can end up spending so much of our valuable time and energy trying to reduce or avoid our natural experience of discomfort, that we miss out on more important things, and in doing so, lose contact with meaning, purpose, and vitality in our work and our lives.
Debbie Sorensen
Engaging in control and avoidance efforts can be especially problematic if they´re not working well, are inconsistent with our values, or are costly to us in some other way. …control strategies can become endless loops of avoidance that get us nowhere, spiraling us into the Cycle of Burnout.
